MBA or Post Graduate Diploma in Japanese management for fresh graduates? Different strokes for different folks

A symposium organised by the All India Management Association (AIMA) in March 2008 suggested that management schools should focus on “constantly improving the quality of their input through effective entry- level processes and moulding the students through a holistic and full-integrated approach, based on academic rigour, building character and nurturing values and a curricula for meeting needs of external environment and user industry expectations.”

Whether management schools in India are able to meet the aforementioned noble goal is moot. What is certain is that potential management professionals have a plethora of options ranging from the very generic to extremely sophisticated, industry-centric courses. The course fees too vary from a couple of lakhs up to even 10 lakhs or more in some cases. No wonder then that choosing the right management program to pursue can be quite confusing, time-consuming and stressful.

How to evaluate management courses: What to look for?

Fresh graduates should consider some basic criteria when evaluating the prospectus of various management programs and institutions. Any Post Graduate (PG) Diploma in Management course or its equivalent MBA should provide the following :

  1. Holistic overview of management concepts, particularly in the areas of time (task management), quality of output, work ethics in a group and increased Emotional Quotient (EQ) levels as a result of all of the above
  2. Provide a framework to help understand the industry that they are likely to work for or specialise in
  3. Stuctured alumni management program and the opportunity to be part of a peer group in the class that will form the foundation for alumni network.
  4. Career counselling, resulting in job opportunities within industries of interest

Aspiring business leaders - why specialise in Japanese management?

As India Inc. diversifies and addresses global opportunities, she also needs to produce talented human capital that adapts to specific local market requirements. Without realising it, most students sign up for a generic management course. Suddenly at the end of the course tenure, they find that neither has their employability index improved nor have their chances of bagging that dream job as they begin competing in a highly commoditised market of generic skills sets. As a result, Students end up taking the “next best” job that comes along.

The PG Diploma in Japanese Management from the RV-Nihongo Bashi Centre for Japanese Management Studies in Bangalore focusses on management education specifically tailored for the Japanese sector. It includes critical Japanisation skills– a must for everyone in this sector in addition to a holistic management curriculum. Interaction with industry leaders, Japanese adjunct and full time faculty, compulsory dissertation, a course on developing EQ amongst other subjects add the necessary curriculum support to ensure desired learning outcomes are the highlights of the program. Continuing investments have created a stellar alumni network that will allow the students to reap “contacts” as the Japanese industry gathers momentum globally and in India.

Given the acute paucity of good quality talent in this sector, it comes as no surprise that placements are usually 100%. As a leader in the Japanese sector, Singapore-based Nihongo Bashi prides itself on working with thought leaders such as the RV group of institutions in Bangalore, to jointly offer this quality program.

Final word
A career is not a sprint but a marathon. No amount of academic preparation will ever guarantee success. For a global market that is changing everyday,an equally calibrated change in response is required. However, the following metrics are still a fairly good yardstick for evaluation of any MBA course.
